Michael Wan
Summer Intern

My first step towards working at HSBC took place in 2006. Back then I was working as an intern in the Mid Market Enterprise Commercial Banking (CMB) segment. I was responsible for projects regarding the reduction of counter transactions at branches to minimize costs. During the project, not only did I gain hands-on experience in customer communications, I also developed techniques in handling customer enquiries and complaints.

The internship allowed me to further develop my interpersonal skills, especially with customers, and provided me with an opportunity to experience the daily operations of one of HSBC's major communication channels - counter at the branches. Without a business background, the experience was invaluable because it showed me the big picture of how it is to work in the financial industry. It was a truly memorable experience, which was instrumental in not only preparing myself as a Management Associate (MA) at HSBC, but also in developing at a personal level.

My summer internship experience, coupled with my engineering background, gave me the perfect foundation for my present career in the CMB Management Associate Programme. I am placed in the perfect environment to familiarize myself with the financial and banking industry, and acquire relevant skills and technical expertise to excel in this fast-moving environment. MAs were given the opportunity to participate in a Group Graduate Development Programme in UK, where MAs from around the world get to work together and share experiences. I also had the luck to be one of the MAs to be assigned to an overseas attachment in India. I was particularly inspired by the experience to lead and work with counterparts from all over the world. It was surely a unique opportunity to appreciate cultural diversity, build a strong international network and, above all, a lifelong friendship. All of these wouldn't have happened without my HSBC Summer Internship experience.
