Group Chairman's View - why HSBC is the best place to work

GLOBAL TRANSACTION BANKING

PAYMENTS AND CASH MANAGEMENT

Our People

Not all of our team members grew up in the banking industry. A good segment of those who have undergone our training and development programme come from different fields; below are a number of profiles of some Xtreme Performers from our four business areas, some with a banking background, some without. Read on as they share their views on PCM and why they joined.

Richard Jaggard
Head of Sales for PCM Asia-Pacific

Richard is a qualified accountant and has held positions in corporate accounting and treasury with US and European multinationals in Europe and the Middle East. He moved into banking in 1997, where he has been focused on consulting with clients on cash management solutions as well as managing sales teams in Europe and Asia. He joined HSBC one and a half years ago and is pleased to see increasing success, based on the dynamism of the people as well as the sustained investment in the business. "PCM was a natural choice for me given the potential growth of the industry and the quality and strength of HSBC's cash management business in Asia-Pacific, as well as globally. Cash management is a service of fundamental importance to Corporations and Institutions, and as a result PCM is a strategic business unit within the HSBC Group. It's been very interesting for me to be part of the successful development of HSBC's PCM business in Asia-Pacific."

Eric Ju
Vice President, Client Implementation

Eric graduated from Chinese University with a bachelor's degree in Information Engineering, following which he spent eight years in a consulting firm with a focus on financial services clients. Wishing to switch to a more progressive long-term career, while able to leverage prior working experiences in the banking industry, he moved to HSBC where he now manages a diverse portfolio of clients. In the transition from focusing on one consulting project to managing a range of projects and clients within PCM, he has enhanced his project management and time management skills. He enjoys the dynamic nature of his work and the many opportunities that HSBC has to offer.

"After I joined PCM, I discovered that most corporations require cash management solutions, so the potential for growth is enormous ... To me, I like to deliver something tangible, like our cash management solutions where customers can realise real benefits after implementation."

Tina Kot
Manager, Market Development

Tina obtained her bachelor's degree in mathematics from the University of British Columbia in 2002. Upon graduation, she worked in administration in a Canadian bank, then decided to pursue her interest in the financial services industry in Asia and joined HSBC. Holding a mathematics degree but desiring to enter a marketing role, she joined the bank for the opportunity to transfer to a position she was more interested in. Recognising the science behind the art of marketing, Tina develops tactical strategies to reach PCM's corporate and institutional market segment. She enjoys the fact that her work touches on many cultures and that she works with people in many different countries.

"PCM is very rapidly expanding, so we need people to help us manage that growth. We need people who are ambitious and who want to be in an industry where they are constantly challenged, with endless opportunities." Lewis Sun
Vice President, Sales

Following the completion of a degree in electronic engineering, Lewis worked in a state-owned IT enterprise in Beijing for three and a half years before doing an MBA in commercial banking management. His IT experience coupled with his banking experience made him a perfect fit for the role of IT Project Manager in the development of an Internet-based banking platform. Upon completion of development, he joined the PCM product team within China and moved to a sales role in Hong Kong. Lewis recognises that the business changes every day and welcomes the challenge of constantly adapting to the dynamic environment.

"PCM is more challenging than other parts of the Bank; it's fast moving and many clients look to it for solutions rather than products. We act as consultants as well; we advise them on how our solutions can fit into their strategies."

Jennifer Heathfield
Vice President, Sales

Backed by a degree in English literature and politics, Jennifer started her career in a privately- owned software company in the UK, selling software solutions to financial institutions, including HSBC. She built up an extensive knowledge in the areas of technology and sales, and ultimately decided to broaden her experience and join HSBC in 2004. She discovered that her work at HSBC was simply expanding on what she already knew, and she enjoys the prestige associated with working at a large financial institution.

"The challenges I expected have held true to a certain extent, and it's easy for people in such a large organisation not to care about what they're doing. However, in PCM people do care ... there's a camaraderie and friendship, and people are willing to work as a team and pull together. You don't always assume that big organisations will be like that."

Wai Chee Lam
Vice President, Product Commercialisation

Wai was brought up in the UK and holds a bachelor's degree in engineering, a Ph.D. and a Master of Public Administration qualification with the initial intent to continue pursuing post-doctoral work and become a lecturer. After moving to Hong Kong in 1997 for a change in scenery, he worked for a number of IT companies providing network solutions and had the opportunity for overseas exposure. In search for new challenges, he was attracted to HSBC PCM's growth potential and joined in June 2006. His unique role is commercialisation manager, where he develops and achieves commercialisation plans for all new products and major enhancements.

"My current role was created as a result of the huge growth both within PCM and in the cash management market, the team saw a gap during new product rollout when presenting technical orientated services to the end customers. My main focus is to help with the rollout process and to enable the sales team to quickly understand the latest features, releases and enhancements of the service and hence shorten the new product introduction process."

Karuna Suggu
Vice President, Product Management

A veteran of HSBC, Karuna joined the bank in India nine and a half years ago following an MBA course and the completion of a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. Currently a product manager in the regional payments team, she began her career with the Bank as a relationship manager, then went into sales before joining the fl edgling PCM team in India and moving to Hong Kong. She is currently working on the end-to-end rollout of new products, a job that puts her in the centre of the development and implementation of payment products that are used regionally and worldwide.

"I am the mini-CEO of my product and I am in charge of the entire life of the product and have to leverage off competencies across PCM to deliver value to customers."

Dorothy Wu
Management Trainee

Dorothy is a recent graduate in marketing from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. During a year in a PR firm, she was drawn towards corporate finance and eventually moved to HSBC as a Marketing Officer in August 2005. Since joining HSBC, Dorothy has learned to take ownership of projects. She enjoys the fl exibility and pioneering spirit of PCM and feels that her previous experience has enabled her to bring in many new ideas and outside contacts to help her excel not only in her current role, but also in future positions within the Bank.

"I think that being able to provide creative solutions is important because PCM is ready to break through any preset rules or ideas."
