Group Chairman's View - why HSBC is the best place to work

WORKING IN THE WORLD'S LOCAL TEAM

What is it really like to work with HSBC? You may have certain perceptions, but to know it is to experience it. And that we cannot achieve with words alone. We can, however, tell you of our strong local culture combined with a truly international environment, our rewards ethos that pays for good performance, and our commitment to training that enables our employees to develop themselves.

The whole ...

...is greater than the sum of the parts. This is a phrase that very much applies to HSBC. Although, as an organisation we are a leader in the world of financial services. It is the power and reach of each of our local teams working together, which make HSBC such a successful and fast growing business. Recognising the importance of local knowledge is a key message of our advertising but it is not merely this. It is a value that we live by. Those who work in the world's local team here in Hong Kong are very much aware that they are 'where it all began'. But they also know that they are part of a team that is truly international with all the exposure, experience and development opportunities that brings.

The people who excel in HSBC...

...are obviously not all the same. Each function and team requires vastly different specialist expertise and skills.

Rewards and Benefits

HSBC is a large, well-established organisation that can offer the creativity of careers performance remuneration and management, diversity, longevity of employment and involvement in society. Indeed we appreciate the significance of our reputation as a prestige employer. But can HSBC offer you the rewards that will enable you to meet your life aspirations? The answer is, it's very much up to you. Our total financial rewards package is already market competitive. However, increasingly our reward ethos is based upon a variable pay for performance meritocracy, whereby annual bonus is linked to a performance appraisal process that looks back at past performance as much as future potential and development. In addition our very top performers, once they reach middle management levels, receive HSBC shares as part of their rewards package, top performing junior management and other employees can receive additional bonus awards. For specific sales oriented roles, sales incentive schemes can offer uncapped rewards potential.

Benefits packages comprise of an approved contributory pension scheme, that is generally taken as a preferred option to MPF, a comprehensive medical plan, annual leave (including sick leave and maternity leave), life insurance coverage, a Sharesave plan where all employees can purchase HSBC shares at discount, and preferential banking terms. Many of our people also participate in the vast array of sports and social activities that are either informally arranged or organised by our Wayfoong Sports and Social Club.

Employee Training and Development

'To be a key value creator by anticipating future business trends and delivering learning and employee development solutions for business success'. This is the vision of our Learning and Development team. It's a vision that translates into a relationship management approach to identify and meet the training needs of our key business areas. Specific product and skills training is provided for all levels of professionals in our personal financial services department, our corporate banking businesses and in the fast developing area of wealth management. Additionally, management training, leadership skills, language and technical skills training, is provided across all departments.

HSBC offers a range of delivery channels that provide the most effective solution. Classroom-based training brings people together to learn and to network. In addition technology is employed to distribute learning solutions and information quickly, either by CD-ROM/DVD or intranet-based e-learning channels.

Professional and comprehensive training resources are a significant benefit of joining the world's local team. Our philosophy, however, is to provide the facilities and resources for our people to access, in order to meet their learning needs and self-development goals. Learning opportunities are there. It is up to our people to take them.

The people who excel in HSBC...

...are obviously not all the same. Each function and team requires vastly different specialist expertise and skills. Indeed, diversity is a cornerstone of our employment and development philosophy. 'An equal opportunities employer' is more than merely a statement of practice, it is a reality that we develop and reward our people solely on their professional capabilities and their performance.

However we have identified some qualities and capabilities that are common to those who excel in HSBC:

Responsive: We will always try to anticipate and act quickly to ensure we meet and exceed our customers' ever-changing expectations.

Respectful: We don't accept stereotypes. We look for the value in everyone.

Fair: We reward our customers for the commitment they give to us.

Progressive: We are driven by the belief that we can shape a better future.

Perceptive: We look harder, in order to understand things more deeply, and this informs everything we do.

The HSBC Capability Framework sets out in detail the capabilities that are important for people to excel in HSBC. This is provided as part of our ongoing process of development assessment that identifies those with the potential for further personal and career development.
