Develop your IT career within HSBC with our entry-level training programme

HSBC in Hong Kong has been pursuing an aggressive business strategy, particularly in Personal Financial Services, Commercial Banking and Wealth Management. As IT is a key enabler of this strategy, the demand for IT development resources to support its development and implementation has increased significantly.

HTSA (HSBC Technology Services Asia-Pacific) is made up of over 30 major departments, with about 2,800 staff. These departments increase the operational efficiency of HSBC in the Asia-Pacific region, and improve and increase the range of services offered to customers through the design, development, installation, operation and maintenance of appropriate computer systems. Each department is responsible for a distinct area of systems development or support. The departments are grouped by types of equipment/applications and by end-users served.

IT Development

IT Development is responsible for the design and development of Banking Systems and Group Systems for Personal Financial Services and Commercial Banking, and also looks after the deployment of Enterprise Data. To ensure that the systems meet the unique requirements of our business, it is our best practice to deploy Group Systems or develop our major software applications and systems internally rather than buying third-party packages.

To ensure that our applications are efficiently and professionally constructed, we have invested heavily in the use of modern software tools. At the same time, we encourage a full understanding of the technical environment. Where efficiency is paramount, assembly languages and other low level tools are employed.

Programming languages we use include COBOL, PL/1, RPG, SQL, C, C++, JAVA, Visual Basic and Assembler, and control languages JCL, CL, DCL, and REXX. Systems we adopt include z/OS, OS/390, TSO, CICS, OS/400, OS/2, Windows, UNIX and CWD. We also employ DB2, IDMS, DB/400, SQL Server, Sybase and ORACLE.

IT Operations

IT Operations comprise Computer Operations, Infrastructure and Telecommunications teams. Our mainframe computers are IBM and IBM-compatibles. We use IBM iSeries mid-range and mini-computers. We use IBM RS/6000, HP, Domino and MS Windows NT servers. Our Microcomputers and Terminals are IBM PC/Compatibles/LAN, OS/2 Banking Terminals, NCR ATMs, Unix/Windows NT Workstations and NCR Cash Deposit Machine. In our network, the major components are Nortel Passport/Cisco Routers. Our Group Router Network (GRN) covers the major/larger offices, whilst Global Data Network (GDN) covers the branch networks globally and comprises over 10,000 Cisco routers, in 76 countries and territories.

IT General

Other IT functional areas include IT Architecture, Information Security, IT Quality, Finance and Planning. These areas serve the important functions of aligning business strategies with emerging technologies, facilitating the implementation of Group IT security standards, improving transparency of IT charges and aligning quality management practices across Asia-Pacific regions and Group standards.

Training and Development

People are our most valuable resources. The enormous range of knowledge and expertise our staff possess is absolutely vital to the very existence and future of our organisation. IT therefore ensures that this knowledge and expertise are carefully nurtured and the personal needs of our people are recognised and met.

With our emphasis on teamwork and on ensuring that we meet our user needs, we look for people who are good team players and are able to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical people. Graduates majoring in IT- and computer-related studies who have strong analytical skills and good attention to detail must, above all, have a strong commitment to a career at the leading edge of the IT profession. For these people, our policy to fill senior positions by promotion from within means that the opportunities for career advancement are excellent.

Training plays a key role. Initial training consists of a one-month induction programme, comprising full-time classroom lectures delivered by experienced staff, various video courses, and course projects to practise teamwork and to familiarise staff with the development environment. Staff can continue learning with classroom training, self-study training and on-the-job training. IT PATH courses in Information Processing, Banking Applications, Technical Skills and Human Resources Development are available to help employees as their careers progress.

Programmers with a higher diploma can progress to Systems Analyst/Programmer positions after 12 months. After 24 months' initial training, Systems Analysts and Programmers who hold a degree become eligible for promotion to IT Officer. As IT Officers progress and develop, they take increasing responsibility for analysis, design and project/team leadership on more complex systems, up to and possibly beyond department management.
