HSBC China earthquake relief

Thank you for your generous donations to the Red Cross to support the relief and reconstruction work in mainland China and Myanmar following the natural disasters. According to the Hong Kong Red Cross, HKD220,016,746.41 was donated by the Hongkong Bank Foundation, HSBC employees, customers and the public through the Bank's dedicated mainland China earthquake relief account. This is the single biggest donation that the Hong Kong Red Cross has received to date.

The above two accounts were closed on 31 May 2008.

The contribution comprises a HK$20,148,144.80 donation from HSBC's charitable arm, the Hongkong Bank Foundation, and a HK$199,868,601.61 donation raised from HSBC employees, customers and the public through the Bank's dedicated account, the HSBC China Earthquake Relief Account, from 14 to 31 May 2008. During this period, in excess of 117,000 individual donations were received from 14 countries and territories.

At the request of HSBC, the Hong Kong branch of the Red Cross Society of China will allocate the above donation for:

• Rebuilding of schools and essential education facilities
• Rebuilding of rural clinics ,rehabilitation centres with critical and advanced medical equipment and supplies, relevant physical and psychological support services to people in need
• Rebuilding of houses and relevant water supplies facilities

Due to the very high volume of requests for receipt, donors should expect to receive receipts issued by the Hong Kong Red Cross by October 2008.
