Special education

The Hongkong Bank Foundation Hong Chi Community Education Institute was set up by the Hong Chi Association in 2003 with a donation of more than HKD1.93 million from the Hongkong Bank Foundation. Its aim is to help cultivate an integrated community by providing lifelong learning opportunities for people with mental disabilities, and encouraging social participation.

Since the Institute opened, more than 50 Bank employees have volunteered to tutor various Institute courses including interpersonal skills and job interview techniques.

The Hongkong Bank Foundation has also donated HKD480,000 to fund a barrier-free learning project run by the Hong Chi Association.

Our partnership with Hong Chi Association won the Outstanding Partnership Project Award 2005/06 from the Hong Kong Council of Social Service.

New teaching approaches

Special education practitioners in mainland China and Hong Kong learn new approaches to teaching through the Mainland/HKSAR Exchange Programme. Since 1997 the Hongkong Bank Foundation has committed more than HKD2 million to the programme.

When participants return to their home provinces they share course materials and teaching kits with colleagues. As a result, children and adults in more than 100 special schools and homes have benefited.
