The HSBC Climate Partnership is celebrating the continuing achievements of its pioneering worldwide programme tasked with creating long-term environmental and commercial value. The five-year collaboration between HSBC and the four environmental organisations (The Climate Group, Earthwatch Institute, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and WWF) has been working to reduce the impact of climate change on people, forests, freshwater and cities, and to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon policies since 2007.
The newly released report, HSBC Climate Partnership Review 2010 brings these achievements together, illustrating how and where the partnership has delivered real and tangible outcomes within the areas of scientific research, pilot projects, clean technology and government policy. HSBC staff engagement and involvement has been integral to the success of a number of key projects.
Protected nearly 3 millions hectares of forest;
Established three practical initiatives across 12 global cities, bringing together business and government to roll out clean technologies - LED lighting, electric vehicles and Smart IT applications. These could cut global emissions by 15%;
Improved freshwater sources for 28 millions people in China and Brazil;
Put 18.5 millions hectares of wetland areas under management;
Involved more than 100,000 HSBC colleagues in primary field research, local volunteering projects and online learning modules about climate change;
Invested 75,000 HSBC staff hours in field research, contributing to scientific understanding about the role of forests in climate change and increasing organisational commitment among employees.
