Wayfoong Volunteers

HSBC employees have been helping local communities for more than 10 years through the Wayfoong Volunteers.

Established in 1993, more than 2,500 employees have become Wayfoong volunteers, building long-term partnerships with the charities they support. They have undertaken more than 900 projects and their services have extended to mainland China.

Since 1998, HSBC has won the Champion of the Highest Service Hour Award organised by Social Welfare Department for the seventh time. The Award recognises employees' volunteer hours contributed to the community service.

  • 1993 Wayfoong Volunteers was launched in response to our employees' interest in community service. Some 100 volunteers joined 11 projects, initially focused on helping the elderly, children and mentally handicapped people.
  • 1998 HSBC won the Champion award for the most volunteer hours given by employees for the first time.
  • 2000 Wayfoong Volunteers expanded to help psychiatric and terminally ill patients and new arrival families. The first volunteer activity in mainland China was organised.
  • 2001 Wayfoong Volunteers partnered with WWF Hong Kong to organise regular environmental conservation projects at Mai Po Nature Reserve.

"It's a rewarding experience! We are like a big family working with different colleagues to serve the community."

"Volunteering has taught me the importance of listening and caring for the needy, which are also useful experiences in my workplace."

"You will get praise from your family and colleagues, but you will also meet with various challenging experiences."

"Wayfoong Volunteers is our long-time partner. We are always impressed and motivated by their continuous commitment and the scope of their community involvement - something which is unique to HSBC. With this partner, we are able to provide better services to those in need."

Sukee Chan, Hong Kong Family Welfare Society

"As a social service provider we are impressed by the volunteers from HSBC. They not only come and play with our clients but also become their teachers. They give up their own time to teach our trainees."
