HSBC's culture of supporting social well-being extends to our employees who are the driving force for our philanthropic and community development efforts.
Established in 1993, more than 2,700 HSBC staff - the Wayfoong Volunteers - power more than 100 projects we undertake each year, selflessly giving their own time to serve the community. Initially about 100 staff members volunteered to help the elderly, the young and the mentally disabled. Over time this expanded to assisting psychiatric and terminally ill patients and new families, supporting environmental initiatives, providing mentorship to students and volunteer activities in mainland China.
Since 1998, HSBC has won the Champion of the Highest Service Hour Award organised by Social Welfare Department for the seventh time. The Award recognises employees' volunteer hours contributed to the community service.
Many volunteers take part in training programmes, learning the additional skills they need to serve as project managers and programme coordinators - skills that they can take with them through the rest of their lives.
"I've made lots of friends and spend time on very meaningful tasks. The volunteering programmes are diversified, which is good for the community, the Bank and me. I learn from my varied experiences and more people benefit."
"It's a rewarding experience! We are like a big family working with different colleagues to serve the community."
"Volunteering has taught me the importance of listening and caring for the needy, which are also useful experiences in my workplace."
"You will get praise from your family and colleagues, but you will also meet with various challenging experiences."

Sukee Chan, Hong Kong Family Welfare Society
"As a social service provider we are impressed by the volunteers from HSBC. They not only come and play with our clients but also become their teachers. They give up their own time to teach our trainees."
