How can I avoid colds and flu?

Q. How can I avoid colds and flu?

A. A. Colds and flu are caused by viruses invading into our respiratory system, usually getting in there through our nose, mouth and eyes. These respiratory viruses are produced in profuse amounts during the early phase of the disease and are shed into the environment by patient's respiratory secretions and excretions.

Most of the time colds and flu only cause minor discomfort, nothing more than a nuisance. Simple routines such as covering one's nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and washing hands afterwards can reduce, though not eliminate, the transmission of such diseases. Always maintain a clean working environment with good ventilation of fresh air. Offices should be equipped with hand washing facilities with adequate supply of liquid soap, paper towels and surgical masks. Also, in the working environment anyone with respiratory symptoms should wear a surgical mask and consult their doctors promptly.

There is no scientific evidence that vitamins, supplements and herbal products can prevent colds and flu. Vitamin C, in general, does not have a significant effect on the colds incidence. However, a few studies have indicated that people with low dietary intake may be less susceptible to colds when taking supplemental vitamin C. Apart from observing a good diet and allowing yourself adequate rest and sleep, you may consider taking the yearly flu shot as an additional boost to your immunity. This would also avoid you transmitting the virus to your family members.
