1. What is a gadget or widget?

Gadget or widget is a small downloadable application (non-executable file) that sits on your desktop. Gadgets or widgets are similar to other applications in that they need to be installed to run, most gadgets or widgets access internet information in order to operate. Some of the most common gadgets and widgets are clocks, calculators, calendars, and weather forecasts.

Gadgets and widgets can be an alternative to multiple open browsers or websites because they don't take up much space and sit on the desktop permanently without any need to open a web browser or enter a website address.

2. What features does the HSBC Gadget provide?

The HSBC Gadget lets you:

  • view the Hang Seng Index*
  • get a stock quote*
  • calculate foreign currency exchange
  • calculate deposit interest
  • create your own Investment Watch List (iPhone/iPod touch version only)
  • view foreign currency exchange rates (iPhone/iPod touch version only)
  • view current time in major cities in the world (Vista, Yahoo! and iGoogle versions only)

3. Do I need to register or log on to use this Gadget?

No, you do not need to register or log on to use the HSBC Gadget. Simply install your preferred version of Gadget to your computer or iPhone/iPod touch and you are ready to enjoy this innovative and handy tool!

4. Is this Gadget available in other languages besides English?

Yes, this Gadget is available in English and Traditional Chinese. The language shown on the Gadget will depend on the language setting of your operating systems (for Vista and Yahoo! versions and iPhone/iPod touch versions) or Google Desktop (for Google version).

5. What do I need to install and run this Gadget?

To provide you with more choices, there are four versions of HSBC Gadget available for you to choose from, depending on your personal preference and the operating system of your computer.

The Vista version requires:

  • Windows Vista with SideBar installed
  • Internet Explorer 6 or up
  • Firefox 2.0 or up

The Yahoo! version requires:

  • Windows XP (Service Pack 2), Windows 2000 (Service Pack 4), Windows Vista, Mac OSX 10.3.9 or up
  • Internet Explorer 6 or up
  • Firefox 2.0 or up

The Google version requires:

  • Internet Explorer 6 or up for Windows
  • Firefox 2.0 or up for Windows or Mac
  • Safari 1.2.1 or up for Mac

The iPhone/iPod touch version requires:

  • Apple iPhone or iPod touch
  • Wireless data connectivity (e.g. WiFi)

You will require an internet connection for this gadget to operate.

6. How do I remove this Gadget from my computer or iPhone/iPod touch?

For Vista and Yahoo! versions, simply right-click the Gadget, and then select "Delete Widget" or "Close Widget". To uninstall the Gadget, click the "+" sign at the top of Sidebar to open the Gadget Gallery, right-click the gadget, and then click "Uninstall" or "Delete".

For Google version, simply click on the "x" sign at the top right-hand corner of the Gadget to remove it.

For iPhone/iPod touch version, touch and hold the Gadget icon on the Home screen until the icons start to wiggle. Tap the "x" in the corner of the Gadget, tap "Delete", then press the Home button to save your arrangement.

7. I have problem installing and running the Yahoo! Widget Engine. What should I do?

8. What should I do if the Gadget is making my computer slow?

The Gadget will consume a small amount of system resources while it is running. If your computer performance is significantly degraded after installing the Gadget, try to uninstall and reinstall it again.

9. How do I minimise the Gadget(Vista, Yahoo! and iGoogle verions only)?

For the Vista version, simply right-click and select "Attach to Sidebar" or drag the Gadget onto the Sidebar.

For the Yahoo! version, simply right-click and select "Hide Widget".

For Google version, simply click the "-" sign at the top right-hand corner of the Gadget to minimise it.

10. How do I change the language of the Gadget?

For Vista and Yahoo! versions, the language shown on the Gadget will depend on the default language of your operating system. For example, if you have a Chinese Windows XP running on your computer, the language shown on the Gadget will be Chinese.

For Google version, simply select either English or Chinese in "Language Tools" of your iGoogle page.

For iPhone/iPod touch version, tap the "Settings" icon on Home screen, choose "General", "International", then "Language". Select the language you want to use, and tap "Done". This will set the language for your iPhone/iPod touch.

11. How do I change the city on the World Clock (Vista, Yahoo! and iGoogle versions only)?

There are over 50 cities for you to select to be displayed on the World Clock!

For Vista and Yahoo! versions, right-click the Gadget, and then select "Widget Preferences". Under the "General" section, select a city from the drop-down list and then click "Save".

For Google version, click the sign and select "Edit settings". Select a city from the drop-down list and then click "Save".

12. How do I change the colour scheme of the Gadget (Vista and Yahoo! versions only)?

There are three colour schemes for you to choose from!

For Vista and Yahoo! versions, right-click the Gadget, and then select "Widget Preferences". Under the "General" section, select a colour scheme from the drop-down list and then click "Save".
