FPS: FAQ

FPS (Faster Payment System) is a payment service platform that allows you to make instant payments to individuals and merchants. You can pay with FPS in Hong Kong dollar (HKD) or Renminbi (RMB) using HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking. It is available 24/7, free of charge*, covering participating local banks, financial institutes with Stored Value Facility (SVF) licenses. You can also make instant remittance payment to personal payees of designated mainland China banks, top up your e-CNY wallet or pay designated Thai merchants instantly by scanning PromptPay QR codes.

Traditional fund transfers require the payee's bank account number, but FPS supports payments made using the payee's mobile number, email address, or FPS Identifier. FPS also enables you with a QR code to receive payments (registration of FPS and activation of Mobile Security Key is required to generate the QR code). You can also receive payments and transfers from institutions, corporates and the HKSAR government via your HKID number.

*There is no charge from us if you pay money to, or receive money from accounts from other banks/ SVFs via FPS, but other banks/ SVFs may have different charging policies.

As FPS transfers are instant, many banks may have imposed stricter controls in place to make sure the recipient's name and bank account number match. If you are transferring via account number and you've used a nickname to add this person to 'My payees', the payment may be rejected due to name mismatch.

Please ask your payee for the exact name the account is registered under. You'll then need to remove them from 'My payees' and add them again using their official name listed in their bank records.

Please note that you don't need to do this if your payee has registered for FPS and you have saved them to 'My payees' using one of their Proxy IDs (mobile number, email address and FPS Identifier).

You can check your Proxy ID’s default receiving bank/ FPS participant on the HSBC HK App. Simply tap on your profile in the top right corner, go to 'Pay and transfer‘ and choose 'Register or view FPS registration'. Then select the Proxy ID that you wish to check and choose ‘Other FPS registrations’.

Because FPS transfers are instant, we are putting stricter controls in place to make sure the recipient's name and bank account number match. If someone is transferring money to you via account number and they've used a nickname to register you in their system, the payment will be rejected.

To send money via your account number, this person will need to use the official name for your account registration. If you're unsure what that is, you can check your bank statement.

Alternatively, you can register for FPS to receive money via Proxy ID (mobile number, email address and/or FPS Identifier), so the person won't have to enter your name.

If your transaction is successful, you will receive a push notification/SMS and email notification. The record will also show in your transaction history.

On the logon page of the HSBC HK App, you can select "FPS transfer" at the bottom left to choose the following functions:

1. Scan to pay: you can make payment by scanning a FPS QR code or a PromptPay QR code of designated Thai merchants
2. Show QR code to receive: you can show your personal QR code after registering for FPS to someone so they can scan it to send you money
3. Make a quick transfer: you can make payment with using the payee's mobile number, email address or FPS Identifier

After you logon the HSBC HK App, you can go to the "Pay & Transfer" tab and select "Other local payees/ FPS" under "Transfer" to make payment using payee's account number, mobile number, email address, FPS Identifier or credit card number.

FPS is a simpler, quicker way to send money to people and merchants across participating local banks and Stored Value Facilities (SVF) operators in Hong Kong, e-CNY wallet, and designated Thai merchants.

You can pay merchants by scanning a QR code or make transfers to your friends just by entering their mobile number, email address or FPS Identifier. You can also have friends send money directly to your bank account as well as transfer money to HSBC and non-HSBC local credit cards to settle statement balance.

You can make FPS transactions to participating local banks and Stored Value Facilities (SVF) operators in Hong Kong and designated Thai merchants as well as top up your e-CNY wallet from anywhere in the world as long as you can log on to HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking.

Yes, you can pay or receive money from other participating payment service providers via FPS.

As long as you have an HSBC HKD or CNY bank account and have registered for Personal Internet Banking, you're eligible to register for FPS by linking your account to a valid mobile number, email address or FPS Identifier. To register for FPS with your HKID number, you'll have to have an account opened with us using your HKID as a document of identification.

Registration is almost instant. You will usually get immediate confirmation, but if you don't, try refreshing the page or going back to the FPS registration page.

You'll receive a push notification/SMS confirmation if you've registered for FPS with your mobile number, or by email if you used your email address, FPS Identifier or HKID.

You can also check your FPS registration status on the HSBC HK App. Simply select your profile in the top right corner, go to 'Pay and transfer', then choose 'Register or view FPS registration'.

If you deregister your FPS Identifier, you will receive a new FPS Identifier the next time you register. You will also be able to link the FPS Identifier to a different account if you wish.

No, you can register with a non-local number. You will receive a push notification/SMS notification upon successful registration.

Only if you are using an non-local number. If you are using a Hong Kong mobile number, the country code will be prefilled.

You may click on the ‘pencil’ logo next to your mobile number or email address and you will be redirected to ‘Contact details’ page to update your mobile number or email address in the bank record. Please go back to ‘Register or view FPS registration’ page to register for FPS after updating your contact details.

You can update your contact details via the HSBC HK App, by visiting our branch, by mail, or by calling our customer service hotline. You may also update your email via HSBC Online Banking.

Once you have updated your contact details, your FPS registrations under your previous contact details will be deregistered. You will need to register for FPS again with your new mobile number / email address via HSBC HK App.

To receive money via a Proxy ID, you need to register for FPS by linking your Proxy ID to a bank account. To receive money via a bank account via FPS, no registration is required. Please advise your payer to choose HSBC (bank code 004) as the payee’s bank or receiving bank, then enter your 10- or 12-digit HSBC account number in the payee account number field. The first 3 digits of your HSBC account number is the branch code, followed by a 7- or 9-digit account number.

To send money to payees who have registered for FPS, you don’t have to be registered for FPS beforehand.

You can only link one HSBC account for each Proxy ID. However, you can use a different HSBC account for each separate Proxy ID. That means you could have linked your mobile number, email address, FPS Identifier and HKID to four different accounts respectively.

Yes, you can change it. To do it on the HSBC HK App, go to 'Profile', find 'Pay and transfer' and select 'Register or view FPS registration'.

You will need to deregister your mobile number or email first and register FPS again by selecting HSBC as non-default receiving bank. If you want to make HSBC your default account again, just check the box beside 'Set HSBC as a default bank when receiving transfer via this mobile number/ email' and click save. Please note that you can't undo this setting.

Yes, you can deregister via the HSBC HK App .

You can check your Proxy ID’s default receiving bank/ FPS participant on the HSBC HK App. Simply tap on your profile in the top right corner, go to 'Pay and transfer‘ and choose 'Register or view FPS registration'. Then select the Proxy ID that you wish to check and choose ‘Other FPS registrations’.

Simply log on to the HSBC HK App, tap on 'Pay & Transfer' and then select 'Other local payees/FPS', or select ‘FPS transfer’ at the bottom left on the logon page.

To receive money via FPS using your Proxy ID (mobile number, email address, FPS Identifier) or personalised QR code, you'll need to first register for FPS via HSBC HK App. You'll be able to easily receive money when people key in your Proxy ID or scan your QR code.

You can also receive money to your bank account directly without registering for FPS. Tell your payer to choose HSBC (bank code 004) as the receiving bank, and then enter your 10- or 12-digit HSBC account number.

Note: The first 3 digits of your HSBC account number is the branch code, and the remaining 7 or 9 digits are your account number.

This lets you make quick payments (HKD or CNY) using FPS. It's faster than a normal transfer because it only supports payments to Proxy IDs. It also automatically takes the payment from your default debit account and sends it to your payee's default account, so you don't have to make many selections to complete a transaction.

For complete flexibility when making a transaction, including transferring via an account number, setting future-dated payments and adding recipients to 'My payees', you'll need to use the 'Other local payees/ FPS' feature under ‘Pay & Transfer’ tab after log on to the HSBC HK App.

If you're new to the 'Make a quick transfer' function, we'll guide you through choosing your default debit account and setting a small-value payment limit. You can use this function after completing these steps.

There is no charge from us if you pay money to, or receive money from accounts from other banks via FPS, but other banks may have different charging policies.

Currently, you can use your HKD account to top up e-CNY wallet in CNY and to pay supported merchants in Thailand using FPS x PromptPay QR payment in THB.

However, for FPS transfers to local payee, no currency exchange is supported. To make transfers using non-HKD or CNY, please use account number to make an interbank fund transfer / telegraphic transfer.

There is no specific function for requesting a payment, but you can ask someone to send you money by providing your Proxy ID or QR code. You may even embed a specific amount in your QR code when receiving money. Please remember that when you show a QR code to request payment, people might be able to see your mobile number or email address if you are using it as your Proxy ID. To keep this information confidential, you may use FPS Identifier as your Proxy ID instead.

Unfortunately, recurring transfers cannot be set up using Proxy ID. However, you can set up a recurring transfer using your payee's bank account number via 'Other local payees/FPS'.

It is mostly the same process, but instead of using the payee's account number, now you can use their mobile number, email address or FPS Identifier, as long as they have already registered with FPS.

The new 'Scan to pay' button allows you to send money by scanning a QR code (even one from your photo album). This feature will deduct your daily small-value payment limit.

'Show QR code to receive' brings up your personal QR code, which you can show someone so they can scan it to send you money.

Yes, it's generally safe to pay via QR code. When you use the 'Scan to pay' function to scan a QR code, the HSBC HK App will ask you to verify your transaction using biometric authentication or Mobile Security Key verification. This ensures that you're the only user, and that no one else is using your device. 

If you've activated Mobile Security Key or biometric authentication, you can use the 'Scan to pay' and 'Show QR code to receive' functions before logging on. However, you'll need to log on before making transactions or changing your settings. If you've not yet activated Mobile Security Key, 'Scan to pay' or 'Show QR code to receive' won't be available, but you can still perform small-value transactions after log on.

If you're new to the 'Scan to pay' function, we'll guide you through choosing your default debit account and setting a small-value payment limit. You can use this function after completing these steps.

If you're new to the 'Show QR code to receive' function and have registered FPS with your mobile number, email address, or FPS ID, we'll guide you through choosing a proxy ID to use with your QR code. You can use this function after completing these steps.

Your QR code will change when you alter your Proxy ID, such as using your email address instead of your mobile number. It will also change when you embed a different payment.

Unfortunately, you won't be able to add them to 'My payees' after paying by QR code.

However, you can use their Proxy ID (such as, mobile number, email address, FPS identifier) or bank account number to add them to 'My payees' via 'Add a new payee' under the 'Pay & Transfer' tab.

No. The QR code scanner in 'Scan to pay' only works with QR codes that support FPS.

No. Your QR code can only be scanned by mobile apps that support FPS.

Please check with your payee to make sure their QR code is a valid FPS QR code and that it is up to date.

Unfortunately, the QR code payment function doesn't support future-dated payments. To set up future-dated payments, simply log on to the HSBC HK App, select 'Pay and Transfer' and 'Other local payees/ FPS'.

You can transfer up to HKD10,000 daily via QR code when sending money to family and friends.

For all merchants, you can transfer up to HKD10,000 daily when sending money to ecommerce, retail companies, and public utilities.

For selected merchants, you can transfer up to a limit of HKD400,000 daily via QR code, depending on your current non-registered account transfer limit (for HSBC HK App/ Online Banking or across channels) and its remaining daily limit, whichever is lower.

You can log on to HSBC Online Banking and visit ‘Pay & transfer’ > ‘Settings’ > ‘Daily payment and transfer limits’ > ‘Other limits’ to check or adjust your maximum daily limit for non-registered accounts.

FPS x Promptpay QR payment allows you to make instant payments to merchants in Thailand from your HKD bank account through HSBC HK App. It is available 24/7 and free of charge.

You can open your HSBC HK App, select 'FPS transfer', then select 'Scan to pay' and scan the Thai merchant's QR code to make payment. We'll ask you to verify your payment details including exchange rate, and authorise the payment with your biometric authentication or your Mobile Security Key. If your payment is successful, we'll notify you via both push notification/SMS and email. You may also check with the merchant directly.

This is an indicative live rate. The actual rate is subject to market fluctuation and will be verified before you confirm the payment.

Outside of normal trading hours (from Monday 7:00am to Saturday 4:15am HKT during US daylight saving time, or 5:15am HKT the rest of the year) and on Hong Kong public holidays, the exchange rate will be with a wider bid/ ask difference.

You can use this service with Thai merchants that support PromptPay and the QR code is tagged to any of the following financial institutions (covering around 90% of PromptPay merchants):

• Bank of Ayudhya (also known as "Krungsri")
• Bangkok Bank
• Kasikornbank (also known as "KBank")
• Krungthai Bank
• Siam Commercial Bank (also known as "SCB")

FPS x PromptPay QR payment supports payments to Thai merchants of designated financial institutions only. If you encounter an error stating the QR code is invalid, it may be because the Thai merchant’s bank is not participating in this service or the QR code does not belong to a PromptPay merchant (for example, a PromptPay QR code is generated for payments to their personal bank account).

Yes, your payments count towards your small-value payment limit, which is shared across other payment methods via HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking.

You can view and change your small-value payment limit by clicking the 'Profile' icon after log on, select 'Pay and transfer' under 'Settings and preferences' on the HSBC HK App.

No. FPS x PromptPay QR payment only allows payment be made from a HKD bank account. You can view the exchange rate before confirming the payment.

In the case of a dispute, contact the Thai merchant directly.

In this case, please choose another payment method acceptable by the merchant.

You can make FPS App-to-App payments on any merchant app that supports the function. When prompted on a merchant app, choose to pay by FPS. You can then select the HSBC HK App from the payment options and this will automatically redirect you to our app. You'll be asked to verify your payment details and authorise the payment using biometric authentication or Mobile Security Key.

If your payment is successful, you'll receive a notification from us. You can also check with the merchant directly.

To use this function, make sure you have:

• Downloaded the HSBC HK App
• Activated your Mobile Security Key
• Selected a debit account for your payments
• Set up a small-value payment limit

All merchant apps that support the FPS App-to-App payment function accept these payments.

No, you need both the merchant app and the HSBC HK App installed on the same mobile device to make FPS App-to-App payments.

Yes, your payments count towards your small-value payment limit, which is HKD10,000 per day and shared across other payment methods via HSBC Online or Mobile Banking.

You can set up, view or adjust your small-value payment limit through the HSBC HK App. Log on and select 'Pay', choose 'Set limits', and go to 'Small-value payments'. You can also manage your limit through HSBC Online Banking. Log on and go to 'Daily payment and transfer limits' under the 'Pay and transfer' tab.

If your payment is successful, you'll receive a notification from us. To confirm your order, please check with the merchant via their app or contact them directly.

Provide your bill reference number if you need to raise an enquiry or resolve a dispute with the merchant. You can log on to HSBC Online Banking or the HSBC HK App and find this reference number in your FPS transaction history.

In the case of a dispute, contact the merchant directly and provide your bill reference number. You can log on to HSBC Online Banking or the HSBC HK App and find this reference number in your FPS transaction history.

Contact the merchant directly and request a refund. Have your bill reference number ready as you'll need to provide it. You can log on to HSBC Online Banking or the HSBC HK App and find this reference number in your FPS transaction history.

In this case, please choose another payment method available from the merchant's app.

You can now top up your e-CNY wallets through the HSBC HK App by transferring funds from your HSBC Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Renminbi (RMB) accounts.

1. Open your e-CNY wallet app.
2. Go to the home page of your e-CNY wallet account and select 'Top up'.
3. Enter a top-up amount.
4. Select 'HSBC HongKong' from the payment options shown on your device.
5. Complete the verification step using your Mobile Security Key or biometric authentication.
6. Select the ‘From’ account, then verify and confirm the top-up transaction (our exchange rate will apply if you select an HKD account).
   
7. Go back to the e-CNY wallet app and your top-up transaction will be completed.

No, you can't edit the top-up amount on the HSBC HK App. If you want to edit the top-up amount, go back to your e-CNY wallet app and adjust the top-up amount before you procced to make the top-up transaction on the HSBC HK App.

You can only top up your e-CNY wallets with funds from your HSBC Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Renminbi (RMB) accounts.

Yes. Your daily small-value payment limit is applicable to e-CNY top-up transactions. The maximum daily limit for small-value payments is HKD10,000 equivalent. If you wish to set up or adjust your small-value payment limit you can do so on the HSBC HK App by going to 'Profile', selecting 'Pay and transfer' then 'Small-value payment limit'. Please note there may be other limit(s) applied by e-CNY wallet operator.

If your e-CNY top-up transaction is successful, we'll send you a notification. You'll also receive a confirmation of the successful top-up from your e-CNY wallet app. You can also check the balance on your e-CNY wallet app.

If you're a Hong Kong resident, Payment Connect allows you to make instant small-value cross-border transfers between Hong Kong and mainland China through HSBC HK App and Online Banking, free of local charge.

You can transfer to a personal payee in mainland China, subject to the daily cross-border transfer master limit, the daily small-value payment limit of HKD10,000 and the annual transfer limit of HKD200,000.

Payment Connect also supports sending payments to Hong Kong using FPS proxy ID or account number. This service is available to both Hong Kong residents and non-Hong Kong residents.

As of 6 November 2025, the banks in mainland China that support Payment Connect are:

You can make payments and transfers to the accounts of the above banks using payee account number or mobile number, and receive payments from them as well. For further information, please contact the banks above.

You can make a Renminbi payment to mainland China through Payment Connect with your Hong Kong dollar (HKD) and Renminbi (RMB) account(s) held with us*. You can also receive payments in HKD or RMB from mainland China.

*Note: Currency exchange will be involved if you make a RMB payment using an HKD account.

Payment Connect supports Renminbi payments only to the designated banks in mainland China. If you can't find the bank in the payee’s bank list, it may be because the payee’s bank isn't part of this service. Please check with the payee about their account.

Yes. Hong Kong resident can transfer to a personal payee with designated payee banks in mainland China, subject to:

• the daily cross-border transfer master limit
• the daily small-value payment limit of HKD10,000, and
• the annual transfer limit of HKD200,000

No. Payment Connect only supports Renminbi payments made from either RMB account or HKD account. 

No. We only support payments to personal payees in mainland China via Payment Connect currently.

No, you cannot. We currently only support payments from a Hong Kong resident to a personal payee in mainland China via Payment Connect. The service is not available to non-Hong Kong residents (that is, non-Hong Kong ID card holders).

The payment is done once you see the confirmation page on the HSBC HK App or Online Banking, and we've notified you via push notification/SMS and email. Please contact your payee’s bank if you'd like to withdraw the completed payment.

Select 'autoPay' under 'More actions' in 'Pay & Transfer' tab on HSBC HK App to set up a new autoPay instruction or manage existing ones.

The lead-time depends on the arrangement with a particular merchant/organisation. You can also check this lead-time with the merchant/organisation in question.

To set up an autoPay with a merchant/organisation that is not on list, select 'Other merchant/ organisation', then enter its bank account number or FPS proxy ID (ie mobile/ email/ FPS ID) and other details.

You can change an existing autoPay instruction by selecting 'Edit autoPay instruction'. To cancel an existing autoPay instruction, you can select 'Delete autoPay instruction'.

Any change to an existing autoPay instruction via HSBC HK App will take effect immediately and be submitted to the relevant merchant/ organisation.

You can review and change your autoPay details in 3 simple steps:

1. Select 'autoPay' under ‘More actions’ in ‘Pay & Transfer’ tab on HSBC HK App
2. Select the autoPay record you want to edit under 'Manage autoPay'
3. Select 'Edit autoPay instruction'.

This is the maximum number of payments you want to allow in a specified period. For example, one payment per week or three payments per month, and so on. You can edit 'Number of payments allowed per frequency' by selecting 'Edit autoPay instruction' under 'Manage autoPay' page.

If your payment amount is likely to vary each time (for example, your electricity bill), please enter the maximum amount you'd expect to pay in a single payment or select unlimited amount.

Please note that if your bill amount is higher than your maximum amount, the autoPay instruction will be rejected and the payment will not go through.

'One-off payment' is a payment that will only happen once, so autoPay will cancel the instruction once it expires or the payment has been made, whichever comes first.

'Recurring payment' is for payments that will happen on a regular basis, such as a monthly bill.

The transfer limit depends on the top up limit of the particular e-wallet you're sending money to. Please refer to the policy of the particular e-wallet.

You can set up, view or adjust your small-value payment limit by going to ‘Profile’, selecting ‘Pay and transfer’, ‘Transfer and withdrawal limits’, then ‘Small-value payment limit’ on the HSBC HK App. You can also do so on HSBC Online Banking by going to 'Daily payment and transfer limits' under ‘Pay and transfer’ tab.

We'll ask you to authenticate the transaction using your Mobile Security Key or biometric authentication if you've already logged on to HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking.

Please note, you will not be able to proceed if you make a payment that exceeds your limit via ' FPS transfer' on the HSBC HK App's log on page. To continue with your payment, please cancel the transaction, log on, then go to 'Pay & Transfer' tab and select 'Other local payees/ FPS'.

If your transaction is successful, we'll notify you about it. The record will also show in your transaction history via HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking.

That depends on the payee's bank arrangement.

You can see your FPS transaction history in your account details via HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking. It will also appear in your bank statement, but some details such as message to payee will not be shown.

You can view the details for both payments you send and receive, including message to payee or bill reference to merchant.

The names displayed have different formats depending on the transactions. If you were the payee, you'll see the payer’s full name. If you’ve sent money to someone, you’ll see a masked version of payee name while payee will see your full name. If you’ve sent money to a merchant, then you’ll see the merchant’s name in full.

With this service, you can transfer in funds in Hong Kong dollars or Renminbi directly, through HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking, from your linked same-name accounts maintained at selected local bank(s) to your HSBC accounts.

First, complete a one-time setup of an account top-up instruction to link your respective same-name accounts via eDDA.  You can then top up your HSBC accounts thereafter.

Remark: eDDA means a direct debit authorisation set up by electronic means using HKICL FPS.

'Top up HSBC accounts via eDDA' service supports Hong Kong Dollar (HKD) and Renminbi (CNY) transfers.

Your HSBC account(s) and same-name account(s) maintained at selected local banks must be of the same currency. No currency exchange is involved.

Remark: Some payer banks might not support both of the currencies. For details, please refer to the bank list.

You can use this service anytime through HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking.

You can view the available local bank list when you select the payer bank ('From' / 'Transfer from' field) during set up.

Top up HSBC accounts via eDDA service is free of charge at HSBC. However, other local banks may have different charging policies. Please contact the payer bank regarding their charges. 

Please also ensure that you have sufficient funds in the payer bank account before submitting your top-up instruction at HSBC. You might be charged by the payer bank if your top-up is unsuccessful due to insufficient funds in your account at the payer bank.

The transfer limit depends on the daily transfer limit of each of your HSBC account's top-up instruction linked to your same-name account in other local banks.

You can view the respective maximum daily transfer limit per instruction for a selected local bank (for example, HKD/CNY10,000) when you set up an instruction or in the bank list, which may differ for different banks. For each instruction, you can set a desired daily transfer limit up to the maximum limit specified, which will later reflect and become effective when you top up your HSBC accounts with that instruction.

In addition to the daily transfer limit for each account top-up instruction, there's a daily master limit for fund-in transfer to HSBC accounts via eDDA (across all account top-up instructions) of HKD100,000 (or its CNY equivalent).

Transfers may also be subject to the other banks' respective limits.

You can delete the instruction via the 'Manage instructions' page on HSBC HK App or HSBC Online Banking and set up another account top-up instruction to link to your same-name accounts again via 'Set up instructions' page.

Via HSBC HK App: After selecting 'Top up HSBC accounts via eDDA', tap on ‘…’ at the top right corner. You can then select the 'Manage instructions' displayed.

Via HSBC Online Banking: After selecting 'Top up HSBC accounts via eDDA', You can find 'Manage instructions' button displayed on the left panel.

We'll notify you when you:

• set up new instructions to link your same-name account at other local bank to your HSBC account. We'll also send notifications to you after receiving confirmation from the payer bank
• submit top-up instruction to transfer funds to your HSBC accounts
• delete instruction to cancel the link between your same-name account in other local bank(s) and your HSBC account
