How to transfer to mainland China with Payment Connect

Step 1

Log on to HSBC HK App and select ‘Pay & Transfer’ or 'Pay' tab (for HSBC HK App new design) and tap ‘With Payment Connect to mainland China’.

Step 2

Select 'From account'.

Step 3

Select a method to pay the payee in mainland China.

Step 4.a

If you've selected to pay via 'Account number', please enter the payee account details as required correctly by confirming with the payee in advance.

Payee's address is optional to provide.

Step 4.b

If you've selected to pay via 'Mobile number', please enter the payee's mobile number and select the payee's bank.
Payee’s address is optional to provide.

Step 5

Enter the transfer amount, and you'll see the indicative rate if currency exchange is involved. Please note that the transfer amount will be verified right before you submit the transfer. Then, select an appropriate purpose of payment.

Step 6

Review the details and scroll down to read the important information. After you've selected 'Confirm' and completed re-authentication, your transfer will go through to the payee's bank or institution.

Step 7

You can save the 'Confirmation' page for future reference by tapping the share icon on the top right corner on the screen.

Log on to HSBC Online Banking and go to 'Pay & Transfer' and select 'With Payment Connect to mainland China'.

Select 'From account'

Select a method to pay the payee in mainland China.

If you've selected to pay via 'Account number', please enter the payee account details as required correctly by confirming with the payee in advance.

If you've selected to pay via 'Mobile number', please enter the payee’s mobile number and select the payee's bank.

Step 5

Enter the transfer amount, and you'll see the indicative rate if currency exchange is involved. Please note that the payment amount will be verified right before you submit the payment. Then, select an appropriate purpose of payment.

Step 6

Review the details. You can edit the payee and transfer details by selecting ‘Edit’ in the respective sections. After entering the security code as required, you can select ‘Confirm’ and your transfer will go through to the payee's bank or institution.

Step 7

You can save the 'Confirmation' page by using the ‘Print' button at the bottom of the screen for future reference.

How to use FPS x PromptPay QR payment in Thailand

Via the HSBC HK App

Before you can use FPS 'Scan to pay' on HSBC HK App, make sure you've:

activated your Mobile Security Key
selected a default debit account
set up small-value payment limit

If you're an iOS user, make sure you've already enabled your biometric authentication on your device.

Activate your Mobile Security Key or biometric authentication with these easy step-by-step instructions.

Once done, follow the steps below.

Step 1

Open HSBC HK App and select 'FPS transfer'.

Step 2

Select 'Scan to pay', then read and agree to the use of stored information (if you're using it for the first time).

Step 3

Allow HSBC HK App to access your camera and scan the QR code of the merchant.

Step 4

Review the HKD debit amount and exchange rate. Select 'Continue' to proceed.

Step 5

Review the payment details and select 'Confirm' to reauthenticate and submit payment request.

Step 6

After you pass the reauthentication, your transfer is complete. We'll send you a confirmation both via SMS and email.

How to top up e-CNY wallet

Via the HSBC HK App

Open the e-CNY wallet of your choice to get started.

Step 1

Select 'Top-up' on your e-CNY wallet account dashboard.

Step 2

Enter the top-up amount and select 'FPS' as payment method. Then select 'HSBC HK' from the payment options shown on your device. You can top up your e-CNY wallet app with maximum HKD10,000 daily.

Next, you'll be taken to the HSBC HK App, where you can select the payment account and verify the details.

Step 3

After authentication, choose a debit account (exchange rate will be displayed if HKD account is selected) to proceed.

Step 4

Verify whether transaction details are correct. Select 'Confirm and pay' to complete the transaction.

Step 5

Your wallet top-up is now complete!

Your transaction reference number will appear on the confirmation screen. We'll also send you a confirmation of the transaction via SMS and email. Select 'Back to merchant's app' or 'X' icon at the top left corner to return to e-CNY wallet.

Outside of normal trading hours (from Monday 7:00am to Saturday 4:15am HKT during US daylight saving time, or 5:15am HKT the rest of the year) and on Hong Kong public holidays, the exchange rate will be with a wider bid/ ask difference.

Payment Connect allows you to make instant small-value cross-border transfers between Hong Kong and mainland China through HSBC HK App and Online Banking. It is free of charge.

Hong Kong residents can transfer to a personal payee in mainland China, subject to the daily small-value payment limit of HKD10,000 and the annual transfer limit of HKD200,000.

Payment Connect also supports transfers to a corporate payee in mainland China for the purpose of tuition fee, medical fee and utility bill payments; it is available to both Hong Kong residents and non-Hong Kong residents, subject to the daily small-value payment limit of HKD10,000.

Similarly, you’ll also be able to receive payments from a mainland China’s account through Payment Connect by using your FPS proxy ID or account number.

Note: The above transaction(s) are also subject to the daily cross-border transfer master limit of HKD3,000,000.

As of 22 June 2025, the banks in mainland China that support Payment Connect are:

Agricultural Bank of China
Bank of China
Bank of Communications
China Construction Bank
China Merchants Bank
Industrial and Commercial Bank of China

You can make payments and transfers to the accounts of the above banks using payee account number or mobile number, and receive payments from them as well. For further information, please contact the banks above.

You can make a Renminbi payment to mainland China through Payment Connect with your Hong Kong dollar (HKD) and Renminbi (RMB) account(s) held with us*. You can also receive payments in HKD or RMB from mainland China.

*Note: Currency exchange will be involved if you make a RMB payment using an HKD account.

You can use this service with Thai merchants that support PromptPay and the QR code is tagged to any of the following financial institutions (covering around 90% of PromptPay merchants):

Bank of Ayudhya (also known as "Krungsri")
Bangkok Bank
Kasikornbank (also known as "KBank")
Krungthai Bank
Siam Commercial Bank (also known as "SCB")

FPS x PromptPay QR payment supports payments to Thai merchants of designated financial institutions only. If you encounter an error stating the QR code is invalid, it may be because the Thai merchant’s bank is not participating in this service or the QR code does not belong to a PromptPay merchant (for example, a PromptPay QR code is generated for payments to their personal bank account).

Top-up amount is non-editable in HSBC HK App. However, if you'd like to edit the top-up amount, you need to go back to the e-CNY wallet app, adjust the top-up amount first and then continue your top-up transaction with HSBC HK App.

Yes. Your daily small-value payment limit is applicable to e-CNY top-up transactions. The maximum daily limit for small-value payments is HKD10,000 equivalent. If you wish to set up or adjust your small-value payment limit you can do so on the HSBC HK App by going to 'Profile', selecting 'Pay and transfer' then 'Small-value payment limit'. Please note there may be other limit(s) applied by e-CNY wallet operator.

If your e-CNY top-up transaction is successful, we'll send you a confirmation both by SMS and email. You should also receive a confirmation of the successful top-up from the e-CNY wallet or can check the balance on your e-CNY wallet app.
